YAMATO: The Drummers of Japan

Student Matinee

YAMATO: The Drummers of Japan takes students on a whirlwind tour of rhythm and culture with more than 40 Taiko drums on stage, each with its own character, size and sound.

The mighty “Odaiko” drum, carved from a 400-year-old tree, weighs 1,100 lbs. and sets the stage for an awe-inspiring experience. But it’s not just about power; YAMATO also creates delicate music, building a unique soundscape.

Founded over 30 years ago in Nara Prefecture, said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture and civilization, YAMATO travels the world to share this longstanding cultural tradition.

Educator Note: This performance features drumming and will be very loud at times. It is customary in the culture that the men may be shirtless at times while performing.
