Speak

Nova Linea Contemporary Dance presents “Speak,” an evening-length work choreographed by Artistic Director Jared Baker. This new creation delves into the thoughts and emotions we keep to ourselves—the ones we choose not to share, whether out of fear, uncertainty, or the need to protect an image of who we are. It asks: what do we conceal, and when—if ever—do we allow those hidden parts of ourselves to surface?

Influenced by the haunting imagery of mimes, “Speak” captures the tension between what is expressed and what remains unspoken. The choreography draws from Baker’s jazz roots, infusing the work with intentional gestures, quirky detail, and Fosse-inspired movement. The piece shifts between whimsical and heavy moments, embodying the delicate balance of what we show the world and what we hold inside.

Through its blend of theatricality and emotional depth, “Speak” creates an intimate portrait of human vulnerability—inviting audiences to reflect on the masks they wear, the truths they keep, and the moments when silence finally breaks.

This event is presented by Nova Linea Contemporary Dance, an independent organization separate from the Marcus Performing Arts Center.

Nova Linea Contemporary Dance, co-founded by Artistic Director Jared Baker and Executive Directors Chris and Kellie Plath, is Wisconsin’s premier contemporary dance company. Known for their emotionally-provocative performances, it is Nova Linea’s mission to provide accessible and relatable stories through dance to their community.

In their first four seasons, Nova Linea has already left its mark on the Milwaukee area and beyond. They have been a three-time finalist for the Detroit Dance City Festival, and were awarded the opportunity to perform in the New Dance Festival in South Korea. In addition, Nova Linea has partnered with two local non-profits, Pathfinders MKE and NAMI Southeast Wisconsin, to help bring awareness and support for mental health. Thus far, they have reached hundreds of students through performances, outreach, intensives, and workshops in their mission to help build the future audience of dance.
