Elegant and enchanting!
Made for adults, and kid- friendly, this Florentine double premier is a beautiful retelling of Cinderella, followed by a mischievous child’s magical world coming to life. If you love the films Amelie and Beauty and the Beast, this sparkly short, sophisticated and quirky pairing will delight.
VIARDOT’S CINDERELLA
Franz Liszt named Viardot a “Genius woman composer” before she even wrote this French opera in miniature. This Cinderella is "a retelling of the Cinderella story with Gallic wit, Italianate bel canto, and a quirkiness all her own.” A godmother becomes a bumbling stepfather, and the fairy godmother appears as a guest who entertains the guests with the song. Look for 2019 Baumgartner Studio Artist alumnus Kathryn Henry stars as Cinderella.
RAVEL’S THE CHILD AND THE ENCHANTMENTS
In Ravel’s words, “this lyric fantasy calls for melody, nothing but melody....” The ensemble cast packs a visual punch in over-the-top costumes. Colette wrote the libretto of this ‘world come to life.’ The furniture, tea cup and fire reprimand this incorrigible child; his homework becomes an old man and a children’s chorus of numbers. These outrageous, larger-than-life characters give him a talking to. He is ultimately redeemed in helping a wounded squirrel in the garden.
Sung in French with English supertitles projected above the stage.
