DESCRIPTION:The winter season is once again celebrated by these unparalleled singer-songwriters in their reunion tour\, back together by popular demand: Patty Larkin\, Cliff Eberhardt\, John Gorka\, and Lucy Kaplansky.  \nIn 1994\, Christine Lavin gathered together the best and brightest singer-songwriters along with folk and Americana artists to showcase the music of the winter season on their now-classic record\, On A Winter’s Night. Individually\, these musicians have released dozens of recordings and toured steadily through the decades\, with fond memories of their time together.  \n Patty Larkin American singer-songwriter and guitarist Patty Larkin redefines the boundaries of folk-urban pop music with her inventive guitar wizardry and uncompromising lyrics and vocals. Described as “riveting” (Chicago Tribune)\, “hypnotic” (Entertainment Weekly)\, and a “drop-dead brilliant” performer (Performing Songwriter)\, Patty has captured audiences for over 30 years with an imagination\, enchantment\, and technical artistry. Recently an Artist-in-Residence at Berklee College of Music and now on the faculty at Fine Arts Work Center\, Larkin reflects\, “I have been energized by the poets\, writers\, and artists I have met while teaching\, and find myself on a journey to break down some of the predictable pathways that songs can travel.” Bird in a Cage\, her fourteenth album\, puts poems from ten notable poets to song for a new and haunting collection that pulses with the magic of lyricism. With 11 Boston Music Awards to her credit\, Patty is also the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music.   Cliff Eberhardt One of the most original songsmiths currently on tour\, Cliff Eberhardt is a highly intelligent\, articulate artist whose penetrating and profound lyrics are sometimes overshadowed by his extraordinary guitar playing. Upon close listening\, the Philadelphia-born singer’s gift for the English language is abundantly clear. The words that tumble from his mouth are framed by a raspy yet deeply elegant voice. Like John Hammond and Richie Havens\, Eberhardt continues to carry the torch for traditional and contemporary folk music through his strong live shows. Whether he’s out on tour solo or with a small band\, Eberhardt’s guitar playing\, singing\, and original folk songs and blues make for a compelling\, thought-filled\, emotional roller coaster of a concert.   John Gorka Hailed by Rolling Stone as “the leading singer/songwriter of the New Folk movement\,” John Gorka is perhaps the quintessential singer-songwriter of the 90s folk scene. Originally from New Jersey\, John served an apprenticeship at Godfrey Daniels coffeehouse in Bethlehem\, PA\, then the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene. Winning the prestigious New Folk Award at the Kerrville Folk Festival\, in 1984\, he was then signed to Red House Records on which he released his landmark first of 17 recordings\, I Know. Boston Globe penned Gorka “for the sophisticated intelligence and the provocative originality of his songs.” Recent accolades include 2016’s Indie Acoustic Project’s Best Singer/Songwriter CD of the Year for Before Beginning (Red House Records). 2018 brought his latest release\, and fourteenth of his career\, True In Time (Compass Records).   Lucy Kaplansky “A truly gifted performer…full of enchanting songs” (New York Times). Blending country\, folk and pop styles\, Lucy Kaplansky has the unique ability to make every song sound fresh\, whether singing her own sweet originals\, covering country classics by June Carter Cash and Gram Parsons\, or singing pop favorites by Lennon/McCartney and Nick Lowe. Lucy’s iconic voice has been featured in film and on television\, including commercials like Chevrolet’s iconic “Heartbeat of America” jingle. A Billboard-charting singer and one of the top-selling artists on Red House Records\, she has topped the folk and Americana radio charts and has been featured on shows throughout the world from NPR’s Weekend and Morning Editions to BBC Radio to CBS Sunday Morning. To learn more and subscribe to all three jazz shows\, click here. \n Benny Benack III  By age 31\, Emmy-nominated trumpeter and singer Benny Benack III has proven to be that rarest of talents: not only a fiery trumpet player with a stirring command of the postbop trumpet vernacular in the vein of Kenny Dorham and Freddie Hubbard\, but also a singer with a sly\, mature\, naturally expressive delivery in the post-Sinatra mold\, performing standards and his own astute songs with a thrilling sense of showmanship. This duel-threat ability was recognized by the 2022 Downbeat Critics Poll where he appeared as not only the #2 Rising Star Male Vocalist\, but a top Rising Star Trumpeter as well. His superb intonation and bracing virtuosity enable him to handle astounding feats of originally composed vocalese (complex solos with written lyrics). On top of it all\, he’s a highly capable pianist as well.  Benny has performed internationally as an Emcee/Host for the YouTube sensation Postmodern Jukebox and achieved his own viral success amassing millions of views for his crooning alongside the Grammy-award winning “8-Bit Big Band.” In early 2020 he released A Lot of Livin’ to Do\, the follow-up to his well-received 2017 debut One of a Kind.   Alongside his global touring as a straight-ahead/contemporary bandleader\, Benny has appeared as a trumpet soloist in more commercial circles alongside Josh Groban\, Ben Folds\, fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi\, Ann Hampton Callaway and more. He’s been featured at Birdland\, Jazz @ Lincoln Center\, Mezzrow\, Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle and other leading New York venues\, and has also been a special guest with the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops Orchestra\, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and the Minsk Philharmonic Orchestra. He made his television debut in NBC’s short-lived\, SNL-inspired variety show “Maya & Marty” playing in the in-studio band led by acclaimed bassist & Broadway arranger Charlie Rosen. His global recognition has been bolstered by recent live-streaming concerts at Smalls Jazz Club\, where he maintains a weekly residency\, as well as frequent appearances on fellow young lion Emmet Cohen’s “Emmet’s Place” weekly show.   Shenel Johns With a voice that embodies grace and passion and a personal style that sways effortlessly from jazz to R&B to gospel\, Shenel has emerged as one of the shining stars of her generation. A native of Hartford\, Connecticut\, Johns has been performing since she was fourteen years of age\, and has developed a distinctive\, eclectic style that has increasingly caught the attention of her peers and some of the industry’s top performers. Johns received a B.A. in music management from the Jackie McLean Institute at the Hartt School of Music and studied performance with such jazz legends as Rene McLean\, Jimmy Greene\, and Nat Reeves. She has shared the stage with music royalty including Curtis Fuller\, Hank Jones\, Dionne Warwick\, and Sheila Jordan\, and has performed and recorded with an impressive array of leaders in the field. In 2016\, Johns completed a musical residency at Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha in Qatar and\, several months later\, honored Billie Holiday as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s New York production of Billie and the Boys. She has also paid tribute to another of her idols\, Lena Horne\, at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s famed Appel Room. Most recently\, Johns was the winner of the Riga Jazz Stage Competition in Riga\, Latvia\, and was featured in the Hartford Jazz Festival’s Ella Fitzgerald Tribute.  Robbie Lee  Robbie Lee is a New York City based pianist\, vocalist\, composer and educator whose spectacular ability to merge his equal talents makes him one of the most exciting emerging artists to date. Growing up in Tucson\, Lee was encouraged by his mother to find music he enjoyed. Falling in love with earlier blues and rock and roll music\, Robbie eventually found jazz as a new way to express himself. Through joining the Tucson Jazz Institute\, Lee was exposed to a broad range of jazz from Traditional to Post-Bop styles. Eagerly gathering information from the plethora of this music\, Lee was encouraged to develop his own voice and keep an open mind.   A graduate of both The Juilliard School (AD ‘21) and The Manhattan School of Music (BM ‘18)\, at 27 he has already shared the stage with his mentors\, such as world renown jazz icons Wynton Marsalis\, Jimmy Heath\, Herlin Riley\, Bruce Barth\, Matt Wilson\, and Brice Winston. Throughout his career\, Lee has earned recognition for both his performance and composition skills\, receiving awards from Downbeat Magazine\, YoungArts\, The Essentially Ellington Festival and Competition\, and The Next Generation Jazz Festival.   Commonly regarded as a first-rate pianist/vocalist\, Robbie draws musical inspiration from Nat King Cole\, Duke Ellington\, Bud Powell\, Thelonious Monk\, and many others. While he mostly performs songs of the Great American Songbook and Jazz Idiom\, showcasing his versatility and deep understanding of the genre\, Lee also enjoys composing new works that feature his peers and himself. As a writer\, Lee has arranged/composed works ranging in ensemble size from solo piano to full orchestra.

DESCRIPTION:“This Spring\, Nova Linea Contemporary Dance welcomes the return of “The Living Room\,” choreographed by Artistic Director Jared Baker and set to Beirut’s album “Hadsel\,” while also highlighting a continued creative collaboration with guest choreographer Chris Jacobsen. Transporting audiences to a quaint\, eccentric\, and whimsical world\, “The Living Room” explores themes of isolation and self-discovery through imagination and introspection. Inspired by Ben Cardew’s description of the album as “a lonely man who has invited his imaginary friends to a party\,” the work follows an individual who envisions a life filled with everything she longs for\, only to realize that what she seeks has been within her all along. \nFor the first time\, Nova Linea will dedicate an entire half of the program to guest choreographer Chris Jacobsen. Known for his physical\, musical\, breath-driven approach\, Chris creates movement that is expansive\, full-bodied\, and deeply soulful—leaving a lasting impression. DESCRIPTION:Slice into a Community Conversation on Culture\, Class\, Race\, & Cake \nDasha Kelly Hamilton describes herself as a “writer\, performer\, facilitator\, mother\, daughter\, sister\, builder\, dreamer\, phenomenon and change agent.” Therefore\, it is no coincidence that she was named Wisconsin Poet Laureate and Milwaukee’s Artist of the Year in 2021. \nIn her show\, Makin’ Cake\, she slices into American history exploring race\, culture\, and class in a refreshing and fun way.  It is storytelling in layers and filled with aha-moments and poignant vignettes\, digital media\, and a supporting cast of two on-stage bakers.  The show serves up an experience and a conversation about equity in America.  Part history lesson\, part social science revelation\, Makin’ Cake is a short story about America’s sweet tooth and pathway to salvation and leaves room for dessert and dialogue with a cake reception immediately following the performance. \nMakin’ Cake was initially commissioned by the John Michael Kohler Arts Center\, and included Kelly Hamilton facilitating arts-based conversations on race and class throughout the community. She continues to develop Makin’ Cake and to pursue dialogues about human and social wellness.
