SUMMARY:Boney James: Slow Burn Tour
DESCRIPTION:Four-time GRAMMY® nominee and multi-platinum selling saxophonist Boney James brings his signature blend of jazz\, soul\, and R&B to the stage. With a remarkable career spanning more than three decades\, his accolades include four RIAA Gold Record certifications\, three NAACP Image Award nominations\, a Soul Train Award for Best Jazz Album\, and most recently\, a historic milestone in 2024 as the first artist to score 20 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Smooth Jazz chart.  \nKnown for his smooth grooves\, expressive melodies\, and magnetic stage presence\, Boney’s music blurs genre lines and speaks straight to the soul. His Slow Burn Tour features fan favorites alongside tracks from his nineteenth studio album\, Slow Burn\, released in October 2024.   \nWith a reputation for electrifying live performances\, Boney James continues to captivate audiences around the world.  \n About Boney James Saxophonist\, Producer and Composer Boney James’  New Album ‘Slow Burn’ slow burn: noun\, informal A feeling that grows with a slow but deliberate intensity. For saxophonist and composer Boney James\, these words perfectly describe the music he has  crafted for his new Concord Records album\, Slow Burn\, to be released on October 18\, 2024. “When I mentioned that phrase to people as a possible title\, they said\, “That also refers to your  whole career in a way” James says with a laugh. “This is my 19th record and I feel like I’m just  hitting my stride.” Slow Burn is a new high point in a remarkable career that now spans more than three decades  and includes a long list of accolades; four GRAMMY nominations\, three NAACP Image Award  nominations\, a Soul Train Award for Best Jazz Album and four RIAA Gold Record certifications.  In 2009\, Billboard named James one of the Top 3 Contemporary Jazz Artists of the decade. In  2024 year Boney became the first ever artist to score 20 number one singles on the Billboard Smooth Jazz chart. But Boney James has never been one to look backwards and Slow Burn\, which the artist  produced\, marks several firsts. Beginning with the album’s opening track\, ‘Arcadia.’ The very first notes on the album are the acoustic bass playing of the legendary Marcus Miller.  It’s one of the few times that Miller\, known for his electric bass guitar work\, has committed his  standup bass playing to a recording and the first time that James has incorporated an upright bass  into his own music Next is James’ intriguing interpretation of the classic ‘Butterfly.’ Co-written by master  keyboardist Herbie Hancock and Bennie Maupin\, the track features Marcus Miller again as well  as young lion Cory Henry’s inspired electric piano. “This beautiful melody got stuck in my head”  explains James. “I have never covered a tune by a legend like Herbie before and I hope we did  him justice.” The title track\, ‘Slow Burn\,’ is one of four tunes on the album that James co-wrote and co produced with multi-instrumentalist Jairus Mozee ( known for his work with Anderson Paak\,  Anthony Hamilton and Nikki Minaj etc.). Another prominent guest artist\, rising-star R&B vocalist October London\, best known for his  2023 hit The Rebirth Of Marvin is featured on the first single from the album\, ‘All I Want Is  You.’ Says James\, “It’s one of the most exciting vocal collaborations I’ve ever recorded.” The funky ‘Slide’ features Boney on tenor saxophone and keyboards\, backed by all the member  of his crack touring band. “This song has a little Minneapolis feel\,” says James. “I got my start as  a professional musician touring with Morris Day\, but this is the first time I’ve copped this  groove.” The Slow Burn continues with ‘A Little Romance\,’ which James calls “a very heartfelt  performance from the saxophone; it’s romantic\, hence the name.” Both ‘Gonna Have a Good Time’ and ‘The Bounce’ keep the mood upbeat. Says James about the  latter\, “When I listen to it\, I start doing this little bounce. It just puts a big smile on my face.” The penultimate track on Slow Burn is ‘Between the Lines\,’ followed by a grooving take on  saxophonist Stanley Turrentine’s ‘Sugar\,’ featuring longtime friend and collaborator Rick Braun  on trumpet. “I’ve always loved this song. It was a really fun and special way to pay homage to Stanley  Turrentine\, who was a definite influence on me\,” says James. Slow Burn follows two of the most successful albums of James’ career\, 2020’s Solid and 2022’s  Detour which debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard Pop Albums Chart. James is\, of course\, thrilled that his music continues to reach new audiences more than thirty  years after he released his debut album\, Trust\, in 1992. “It’s always been my goal to be one of  those guys that would just keep doing it at a high level\,” he says\, “and to have that connection  with the audience.” That’s what it’s always been about for Boney James. Growing up in New Rochelle\, New York\,  James played clarinet in his school band\, but two years later\, he says\, “The teacher needed a sax  player. As soon as I switched\, playing it became my favorite thing to do.” By the time he entered his teens\, James was already gigging with bands\, and he turned pro at 19.  After years of paying his dues with artists like The Isley Brothers\, Teena Marie and many more\,  Boney cut his first album on an independent label\, which led immediately to a major label deal  and a string of increasingly successful recordings and nonstop touring. Now residing in Los Angeles with wife\, director Lily Mariye\, James says\, “I wake up each day and try to play a little better. To quote the cellist Pablo  Casals ‘I think I’m making progress.’ I am really proud of my playing on this new record. And I  absolutely love the songs and the sound I achieved.” Some might say it has a Slow Burn: a deliberate intensity.

SUMMARY:Speak
DESCRIPTION:Nova Linea Contemporary Dance presents “Speak\,” an evening-length work choreographed by Artistic Director Jared Baker. This new creation delves into the thoughts and emotions we keep to ourselves—the ones we choose not to share\, whether out of fear\, uncertainty\, or the need to protect an image of who we are. It asks: what do we conceal\, and when—if ever—do we allow those hidden parts of ourselves to surface?  \nInfluenced by the haunting imagery of mimes\, “Speak” captures the tension between what is expressed and what remains unspoken. The choreography draws from Baker’s jazz roots\, infusing the work with intentional gestures\, quirky detail\, and Fosse-inspired movement. The piece shifts between whimsical and heavy moments\, embodying the delicate balance of what we show the world and what we hold inside.  \nThrough its blend of theatricality and emotional depth\, “Speak” creates an intimate portrait of human vulnerability—inviting audiences to reflect on the masks they wear\, the truths they keep\, and the moments when silence finally breaks. \nThis event is presented by Nova Linea Contemporary Dance\, an independent organization separate from the Marcus Performing Arts Center.  \n About Nova Linea Contemporary Dance Nova Linea Contemporary Dance\, co-founded by Artistic Director Jared Baker and Executive Directors Chris and Kellie Plath\, is Wisconsin’s premier contemporary dance company. Known for their emotionally-provocative performances\, it is Nova Linea’s mission to provide accessible and relatable stories through dance to their community.  In their first four seasons\, Nova Linea has already left its mark on the Milwaukee area and beyond. The Musical features the hit songs “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas” (written by Albert Hague and Dr. Seuss) from the original animated series. Max the Dog narrates as the mean and scheming Grinch\, whose heart is “two sizes too small\,” decides to steal Christmas away from the Holiday loving Whos. Magnificent sets (John Lee Beatty) and costumes (Robert Morgan) inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations help transport audiences to the whimsical world of Whoville\, while the Music and Book of Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason breathe new life into this timeless story of the true meaning of Christmas. The 2024 production is directed by Matt August and choreographed by Bob Richard based on the original choreography by John DeLuca and originally created by 4-time Tony Award® winning director\, Jack O’Brien.  \n“He’s a mean one\, Mr. Grinch – but oh\, what a charmer! Joyously wicked and funny…” – The New York Times  \nBroadway Buzz: Cocktails to Curtain – a pre-show discussion open to all ticket holders in MPAC’s Anello Atrium on Tuesday\, November 25 from 6:30 – 7:15 PM. The discussion for this performance will be hosted by Critics’ Choice Association member and entertainment journalist\, Ryan Jay\, focusing on the journey from page – to screen – to stage\, and how the Grinch has delighted audiences for generations. Ryan’s guest for this session will be Milwaukee actor and director Randall Dodge\, who will share his own experiences in this iconic role. Attendee questions are welcome and encouraged. \nPost-Show Q&A – Join us for a post-show Q&A with some of the cast after the show on Wednesday\, November 26! Simply move up near the front of the stage once the house lights go up. \n

SUMMARY:Christmas with C.S. Lewis
DESCRIPTION:In the early years of his young adult life\, C.S. Lewis believed the story of Christ’s birth was nothing more than feel-good myth. That all changed after a particular encounter with his great friend and fellow author\, J.R.R. Tolkien. Although both men loved mythology in general\, Tolkien was convinced that the Jesus myth was the one true myth. That was the start of Lewis’ journey from Atheism to Christianity. From that point on Christmas\, for Lewis\, took on an entirely different meaning.  \nHere we find him at his home near Oxford on Christmas Eve hosting a group of Americans who are Christmassing in England. They are about to experience an unforgettable assortment of Yuletide recollections which stimulate a whole range of emotions – curiosity\, laughter\, gladness and even some tears. Above all\, they will discover how that encounter with Tolkien forever changed his Christmas celebrations.  \nThis event is presented by Emery Entertainment\, an independent organization separate from the Marcus Performing Arts Center.  \n ABOUT DAVID PAYNE  Since landing his first role as C.S. Lewis in the 1990s\, David Payne has become the world’s foremost actor in the world of Lewis. He has performed as C.S. Lewis in more than 1\,000 productions\, in front of nearly 750\,000 people. There almost seems to be a magical connection between Payne and his audiences.  Throughout the entire performance audience members feel as if they’re in the presence of the great author\, scholar\, and humorist as Payne completely embodies the role.  To learn more about David Payne’s work\, visit www.birdandbabyproductions.com.

SUMMARY:On A Winter’s Night
DESCRIPTION:The winter season is once again celebrated by these unparalleled singer-songwriters in their reunion tour\, back together by popular demand: Patty Larkin\, Cliff Eberhardt\, John Gorka\, and Lucy Kaplansky.  \nIn 1994\, Christine Lavin gathered together the best and brightest singer-songwriters along with folk and Americana artists to showcase the music of the winter season on their now-classic record\, On A Winter’s Night. Individually\, these musicians have released dozens of recordings and toured steadily through the decades\, with fond memories of their time together.  \n Patty Larkin American singer-songwriter and guitarist Patty Larkin redefines the boundaries of folk-urban pop music with her inventive guitar wizardry and uncompromising lyrics and vocals. Described as “riveting” (Chicago Tribune)\, “hypnotic” (Entertainment Weekly)\, and a “drop-dead brilliant” performer (Performing Songwriter)\, Patty has captured audiences for over 30 years with an imagination\, enchantment\, and technical artistry. Recently an Artist-in-Residence at Berklee College of Music and now on the faculty at Fine Arts Work Center\, Larkin reflects\, “I have been energized by the poets\, writers\, and artists I have met while teaching\, and find myself on a journey to break down some of the predictable pathways that songs can travel.” Bird in a Cage\, her fourteenth album\, puts poems from ten notable poets to song for a new and haunting collection that pulses with the magic of lyricism. With 11 Boston Music Awards to her credit\, Patty is also the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music.   Cliff Eberhardt One of the most original songsmiths currently on tour\, Cliff Eberhardt is a highly intelligent\, articulate artist whose penetrating and profound lyrics are sometimes overshadowed by his extraordinary guitar playing. Upon close listening\, the Philadelphia-born singer’s gift for the English language is abundantly clear. The words that tumble from his mouth are framed by a raspy yet deeply elegant voice. Like John Hammond and Richie Havens\, Eberhardt continues to carry the torch for traditional and contemporary folk music through his strong live shows. Whether he’s out on tour solo or with a small band\, Eberhardt’s guitar playing\, singing\, and original folk songs and blues make for a compelling\, thought-filled\, emotional roller coaster of a concert.   John Gorka Hailed by Rolling Stone as “the leading singer/songwriter of the New Folk movement\,” John Gorka is perhaps the quintessential singer-songwriter of the 90s folk scene. Originally from New Jersey\, John served an apprenticeship at Godfrey Daniels coffeehouse in Bethlehem\, PA\, then the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene. Winning the prestigious New Folk Award at the Kerrville Folk Festival\, in 1984\, he was then signed to Red House Records on which he released his landmark first of 17 recordings\, I Know. Boston Globe penned Gorka “for the sophisticated intelligence and the provocative originality of his songs.” Recent accolades include 2016’s Indie Acoustic Project’s Best Singer/Songwriter CD of the Year for Before Beginning (Red House Records). 2018 brought his latest release\, and fourteenth of his career\, True In Time (Compass Records).   Lucy Kaplansky “A truly gifted performer…full of enchanting songs” (New York Times). Blending country\, folk and pop styles\, Lucy Kaplansky has the unique ability to make every song sound fresh\, whether singing her own sweet originals\, covering country classics by June Carter Cash and Gram Parsons\, or singing pop favorites by Lennon/McCartney and Nick Lowe. Lucy’s iconic voice has been featured in film and on television\, including commercials like Chevrolet’s iconic “Heartbeat of America” jingle. A Billboard-charting singer and one of the top-selling artists on Red House Records\, she has topped the folk and Americana radio charts and has been featured on shows throughout the world from NPR’s Weekend and Morning Editions to BBC Radio to CBS Sunday Morning. One of the most in-demand harmony singers\, Lucy has sung on countless records\, performing with Suzanne Vega\, Bryan Ferry\, Nanci Griffith\, and Shawn Colvin.

SUMMARY:Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents: Great American Crooners
DESCRIPTION:Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents: Great American Crooners celebrates the timeless charm of legendary voices like Frank Sinatra\, Tony Bennett\, and Bobby Darin\, whose velvety voices and sentimental serenades made them superstars on stage and screen. This stylish evening of classic tunes features acclaimed vocalists Robbie Lee and Shenel Johns\, along with Downbeat Magazine’s #1 Rising Star Male Vocalist\, Benny Benack III\, all of whom have graced Jazz at Lincoln Center’s stages.  \nRelive classics like “I’ve Got You Under My Skin\,” “Misty\,” “I Only Have Eyes for You\,” and “Moon River\,” while hearing incredible true stories about the crooners who made them famous.   \nFor over three decades\, Jazz at Lincoln Center has been a leading advocate for jazz\, culture\, and arts education. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents touring initiative offers an opportunity to experience great jazz programming\, featuring up-and-coming musicians identified as rising stars by JALC.  \nThis show is part of the 2025/26 MPAC Presents Jazz series. To learn more and subscribe to all three jazz shows\, click here. \n Benny Benack III By age 31\, Emmy-nominated trumpeter and singer Benny Benack III has proven to be that rarest of talents: not only a fiery trumpet player with a stirring command of the postbop trumpet vernacular in the vein of Kenny Dorham and Freddie Hubbard\, but also a singer with a sly\, mature\, naturally expressive delivery in the post-Sinatra mold\, performing standards and his own astute songs with a thrilling sense of showmanship. This duel-threat ability was recognized by the 2022 Downbeat Critics Poll where he appeared as not only the #2 Rising Star Male Vocalist\, but a top Rising Star Trumpeter as well. His superb intonation and bracing virtuosity enable him to handle astounding feats of originally composed vocalese (complex solos with written lyrics). On top of it all\, he’s a highly capable pianist as well.  Benny has performed internationally as an Emcee/Host for the YouTube sensation Postmodern Jukebox and achieved his own viral success amassing millions of views for his crooning alongside the Grammy-award winning “8-Bit Big Band.” In early 2020 he released A Lot of Livin’ to Do\, the follow-up to his well-received 2017 debut One of a Kind.   Alongside his global touring as a straight-ahead/contemporary bandleader\, Benny has appeared as a trumpet soloist in more commercial circles alongside Josh Groban\, Ben Folds\, fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi\, Ann Hampton Callaway and more. He’s been featured at Birdland\, Jazz @ Lincoln Center\, Mezzrow\, Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle and other leading New York venues\, and has also been a special guest with the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops Orchestra\, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and the Minsk Philharmonic Orchestra. He made his television debut in NBC’s short-lived\, SNL-inspired variety show “Maya & Marty” playing in the in-studio band led by acclaimed bassist & Broadway arranger Charlie Rosen. His global recognition has been bolstered by recent live-streaming concerts at Smalls Jazz Club\, where he maintains a weekly residency\, as well as frequent appearances on fellow young lion Emmet Cohen’s “Emmet’s Place” weekly show.   Shenel Johns With a voice that embodies grace and passion and a personal style that sways effortlessly from jazz to R&B to gospel\, Shenel has emerged as one of the shining stars of her generation. A native of Hartford\, Connecticut\, Johns has been performing since she was fourteen years of age\, and has developed a distinctive\, eclectic style that has increasingly caught the attention of her peers and some of the industry’s top performers. Johns received a B.A. in music management from the Jackie McLean Institute at the Hartt School of Music and studied performance with such jazz legends as Rene McLean\, Jimmy Greene\, and Nat Reeves. She has shared the stage with music royalty including Curtis Fuller\, Hank Jones\, Dionne Warwick\, and Sheila Jordan\, and has performed and recorded with an impressive array of leaders in the field. In 2016\, Johns completed a musical residency at Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha in Qatar and\, several months later\, honored Billie Holiday as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s New York production of Billie and the Boys. She has also paid tribute to another of her idols\, Lena Horne\, at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s famed Appel Room. Most recently\, Johns was the winner of the Riga Jazz Stage Competition in Riga\, Latvia\, and was featured in the Hartford Jazz Festival’s Ella Fitzgerald Tribute. Robbie Lee Robbie Lee is a New York City based pianist\, vocalist\, composer and educator whose spectacular ability to merge his equal talents makes him one of the most exciting emerging artists to date. Growing up in Tucson\, Lee was encouraged by his mother to find music he enjoyed. Falling in love with earlier blues and rock and roll music\, Robbie eventually found jazz as a new way to express himself. Through joining the Tucson Jazz Institute\, Lee was exposed to a broad range of jazz from Traditional to Post-Bop styles. Eagerly gathering information from the plethora of this music\, Lee was encouraged to develop his own voice and keep an open mind.   A graduate of both The Juilliard School (AD ‘21) and The Manhattan School of Music (BM ‘18)\, at 27 he has already shared the stage with his mentors\, such as world renown jazz icons Wynton Marsalis\, Jimmy Heath\, Herlin Riley\, Bruce Barth\, Matt Wilson\, and Brice Winston. Throughout his career\, Lee has earned recognition for both his performance and composition skills\, receiving awards from Downbeat Magazine\, YoungArts\, The Essentially Ellington Festival and Competition\, and The Next Generation Jazz Festival.   Commonly regarded as a first-rate pianist/vocalist\, Robbie draws musical inspiration from Nat King Cole\, Duke Ellington\, Bud Powell\, Thelonious Monk\, and many others. While he mostly performs songs of the Great American Songbook and Jazz Idiom\, showcasing his versatility and deep understanding of the genre\, Lee also enjoys composing new works that feature his peers and himself. As a writer\, Lee has arranged/composed works ranging in ensemble size from solo piano to full orchestra.

SUMMARY:Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo
DESCRIPTION:Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo brings its internationally beloved troupe of male dancers to Milwaukee to perform a brilliant combination of skillful pointe work and hilarious parodying of classical ballet favorites like Swan Lake. Founded in New York City in 1974\, the company\, affectionately known as the Trocks\, first captivated small audiences in late-late shows in off-off Broadway lofts who embraced their unconventional humor and impeccable technique.  \nSince then\, the Trocks have pirouetted their way onto the world stage with their playful blend of dance knowledge\, comedy\, and athleticism. Whether you’re a die-hard dance lover or a first-time balletgoer\, their mix of artistry and absurdity will leave you in awe. SUMMARY:Tales of Hoffmann
DESCRIPTION:The Tales of Hoffmann (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) is a haunting opera that dives into the stormy\, occasionally uncanny\, love life of poet Hoffmann. In a series of flashbacks (and perhaps a bit too much wine)\, Hoffmann recounts three romantic escapades\, each with its own fantastical twist—and each disastrously interrupted by a shadowy villain determined to ruin his good time. The opera is a blend of romance\, heartbreak\, and just the right dose of the surreal\, proving that in Hoffmann’s world\, if something seems too good to be true\, it probably involves an evil doppelgänger or a mechanical doll. \nPerformed in French with English supertitles. \nPre-Opera Talk\nMarch 13\, 2026 at 6:30pm\nMarch 15\, 2026 at 1:30pm \n Artists & Cast COMPOSED BY Jacques OffenbachSTAGE DIRECTED BY David Lefkowich *CONDUCTED BY Francesco MiliotoWITH THE Milwaukee Symphony OrchestraFEATURING The Florentine Opera Chorus\,Dr. Benjamin Rivera\, Chorus Master Performers Hoffmann Kang Wang *Heroines: (Antonia\, Olympia\, Giulietta\, Stella) Susanne Burgess *Villains: (Lindorf\, Coppélius\, Dr. Miracle\, Dappertutto) Christian Pursell *(Niklaus/Muse) Emily Fons(Valet Tenors: Frantz\, Andres\, Cochenille\, Pittichinaccio) Julius Ahn *(Voice of Antonia’s Mother) Lauryn Nelson + (Spalanzani\, Nathanael) Zach Taylor +(Crespel\, Hermann) David Drettwan +(Schlémil\, Luther) Dylan Gregg *Indicates Florentine Opera Debut | + Baumgartner Studio Artist | ^ Baumgartner Studio Artist Alum
