SUMMARY:Jonathan Richman
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Tommy Larkins on the Drums\n“Richman is one of America’s most unique and dynamic songwriters.” – Nashville Scene \n“Richman didn’t need much else besides a beat to work his magic.” – New York Daily News \n“Buy tickets early. Buy tickets often. This is just good general life advice\, but even more so when you’re talking about Jonathan Richman. Don’t get denied at the door\, don’t leave things up to chance: You will regret it.” – Nashville Scene \n“Rhymes worthy of Ogden Nash.” – The New York Times \n“Richman has spent decades removing barriers between himself and his audience\, cultivating an intimacy that is almost extinct in modern music.”– Nashville Scene \nFrom the artist himself: “The music we’re doing now works well in quiet places like theaters and performing art centers. We still don’t use a program or a set list so we don’t know what we’ll do until we do it. Please do not expect old songs. Many singers my age do a retrospective; this show is not like that. It’s mostly stuff made up in the last 3 and 4 years. Some of the songs presented might be in different languages; this is not to be esoteric or clever\, it’s because the different languages help me express different feelings sometimes. One last thing\, my idea of a good show has nothing to do with applause. It’s about if all the songs I sang that night were ones that I felt.” \n  \nThis event is presented by Alternative Concert Group\, an independent organization separate from Marcus Performing Arts Center (MPAC).

SUMMARY:Kandace Springs
DESCRIPTION:Kandace Springs is an accomplished artist whose soulful jazz singing led her late mentor Prince to praise her “voice that can melt snow.” Called “a vocal force to be reckoned with” (Okayplayer) and dubbed a “versatile and vital artist” (Afropunk)\, Kandace touches on soul and pop while channeling her jazz influences and Nashville upbringing. Putting her own rich and complex spin on classics\, her intensely expressive mastery over the piano is remarkable. \nHer newest album\, Songs For My Father\, is a tribute to her late father\, legendary Nashville soul singer Scat Spring. With a release set for late Spring 2023\, this is the first album of hers to feature almost all original songs\, written by Kandace both solo and with stellar collaborators\, such as Gregg Wells (Adele)\, Matt Hales (Liane La Havas)\, and her long-time partners Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken (Rihanna). \nBacked by her ace all-female rhythm section\, and joined by a stellar group of guest artists\, including Elena Pinderhughes and Karriem Riggins\, Kandace delivers her most heartfelt and personal record yet. The songs range from an early gem\, “Look\,” that Kandace actually wrote with her father\, to the album’s feature track\, “Run Your Race\,” written in late 2022\, which is a touching tribute to her college track star dad’s journey through life. A couple of classic standards\, “Wild Is The Wind” (made famous by Nina Simone) and “What a Wonderful World\,” make their appearance as well\, as they were songs that Scat introduced to his daughter in her formative years. \nKandace’s previous album\, The Women Who Raised Me (2020)\, garnered 5-star reviews from publications ranging from DownBeat to The New Yorker\, as well as winning the Deutscher JazzPreis for Best Vocal Album of the Year.

SUMMARY:Dixie's Tupperware Party
DESCRIPTION:Dixie Longate is the fast-talking\, gum chewing\, ginger-haired Alabama gal who is bringing your grandma’s Tupperware party into the 21st century. Audiences howl with laughter as Dixie demonstrates the many alternative uses for the iconic plastic kitchen staple. Filled with outrageously funny tales\, heartfelt accounts\, audience participation and a little bit of empowerment and homespun wisdom\, Dixie’s Tupperware Party leaves your heart a little bigger and your food a little fresher. \nBiography: \nDixie Longate hails from Mobile\, Alabama where she lives with her three kids: Wynona\, Dwayne and Absorbine\, Jr. She started selling Tupperware as part of the conditions of her parole back in 2001. Within a few years\, she became the top-selling Tupperware representative in the US. When a friend of hers told her she should turn her living room party into a theatrical show\, she laughed so hard at the idea\, she almost had to put down her drink.\n‍\nDixie’s Tupperware Party soon opened off-Broadway in 2007 to both raving fans and great reviews. The show earned Dixie a Drama Desk Award Nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance. She lost to Laurence Fishburne. Really. Look it up. \nThe following year\, with plastic bowls in hand\, she embarked on a small tour to some theaters in the US.  Twelve years later\, that tour was still running and had become one of the longest-running off-broadway tours in American theater history.

SUMMARY:Late Nite Catechism
DESCRIPTION:Late Nite Catechism is an uproariously funny play that takes the audience back to their youth. The irrepressible Sister teaches class to a roomful of “students.” Throughout the course of the class the benevolent instructor rewards the “students” for correct answers with glow-in-the-dark rosaries and other nifty prizes. \nNaughty students may well find themselves on stage sitting in a corner reflecting their actions. However\, even the most reluctant “students” will be clamoring to get into this Sister’s class. The New York Times calls Late Nite Catechism “interactive theater at its best and full of laughs!” \nThis event is presented by Entertainment Events an independent organization separate from Marcus Performing Arts Center (MPAC).
