NEA Artworks awards the Florentine Opera a $35,000 grant to produce and record commercially the world premiere production of Robert Aldridge and Herschel Garfein’s Sister Carrie in October, 2016 in Uihlein Hall.
The Florentine Opera will build, mount, and professionally record the world-premiere production of Robert Aldridge and Herschel Garfein’s newest opera, Sister Carrie. Based on the novel of the same name written by Theodore Dreiser in 1900, the opera captures and reveals America at a pivotal juncture in the country’s social history, as factories industrialized and large segments of the rural populace flooded into the urban sea of humanity. Against this backdrop, Aldridge and Garfein have written an opera that brims and bustles with this monumental American moment.
